What is Genuine Vachetta Leather? Why Is It Preferred?
The term "vegetable-tanned leather" (vaketa) you encounter when buying a leather bag or wallet actually tells you a lot about how the leather is processed. Vegetable-tanned leather is obtained by processing bovine (usually calf) hides using a vegetable tanning method. In this method, instead of chemicals like chromium, vegetable tannins (tree bark, leaf extracts) are used—the process takes longer, but the result is a natural, breathable leather that gains character over time.
Distinguishing Features of Vegetable-Tanned Leather
The most prominent feature of vegetable-tanned leather is that it develops a "patina": with exposure to sunlight, handling, and time, the leather surface darkens slightly, gains a luster, and takes on a look unique to its user. Unlike synthetic leather, its surface is not uniform or overly shiny; it bears natural pores and a fibrous texture. It also has a distinctive, light, and natural scent—a scent usually absent in chemically treated leathers.
Why Choose It?
- Durability: Vegetable-tanned leather can be used for decades with proper care.
- Aesthetic aging: It does not deteriorate as it wears; on the contrary, it gains a richer appearance.
- Repairability: Scratches and minor damages can usually be remedied with leather conditioner; this is not possible with synthetic leather.
- Breathability: Due to its natural porous structure, it reduces sweating and moisture buildup.
The Use of Vegetable-Tanned Leather at Gillario
The genuine vegetable-tanned calfskin we use in all Gillario bags and wallets is processed in our workshop using traditional saddle-stitching techniques. By combining the leather with solid brass buckles and YKK zippers, we aim for both aesthetic and functional integrity. The fact that our products are covered by a 2-Year Craftsmanship Guarantee is a testament to the confidence we have in the materials we use and our workmanship.
If you want to accelerate or protect your leather bag's patina process, regular application of leather conditioner (every 3-4 months) is the most effective method. In our next post, we will share practical tips on waxed canvas care.
