1. Take a Close Look at the Stitches

Machine stitching usually has a completely uniform, mechanical appearance. Hand stitching — especially using the traditional saddle stitch technique — may have slight irregularities but is much stronger. In saddle stitching, two needles are used, and the thread crosses through the stitch; this way, if a single point breaks, the seam will not unravel, whereas in machine stitching, a single broken point can cause the entire line to come undone.

2. Check the Leather Scent and Texture

Genuine, vegetable-tanned leather has a distinct natural smell; in synthetic leather, this smell is either absent or a chemical odor is detected. When looking closely at the surface, natural pores and a slightly irregular texture are visible in genuine leather; synthetic leather is usually uniform and overly smooth.

3. Pay Attention to Edge Finishing

In handmade leather products, the edges are carefully sanded, painted, and burnished. Uneven, sharp, or unfinished edges are usually signs of mass production.

4. Hardware Quality

In a handmade, high-quality bag, buckles and zippers are usually selected from durable metals like solid brass or steel, and from well-known manufacturers. Lightweight, plastic-feeling hardware usually indicates low-cost mass production.

5. Workshop and Production Transparency

A true craft brand is transparent about where and how the product is made — it shares information about the workshop location, the source of the materials used, and the production process. Details like an authenticity card with a serial number are also part of this transparency.

6. Price-Value Balance

Craftsmanship requires material quality and time; therefore, genuine handmade leather products are usually higher priced than their mass-produced counterparts. Claims of "handmade leather bags" at extremely low prices should be approached with caution.
